Last April, we celebrated my late cousin’s birthday at a Chinese restaurant in BGC. Chinese cuisine is unquestionably a favorite in the family. Fair choices on familiar orders take our palate to a safe option by choosing Chinese food as the default. These days when traffic is such a pain, we always settle for some restaurants in BGC which is near our place. After doing my research, I was able to convince my family to dine in Modern Shang, a relatively new resto in Bonifacio Global City.

Location and Ambience

Modern Shang is located in 26th street together with other newly opened restaurants. From the outside, it looks huge and very spacious, but once you step inside, it’s just a medium-sized dining area that can host around 50 guests if I am not mistaken. The wide windows create the illusion of space and allow natural sunlight to brighten the room. I like the interiors of this casual-themed Chinese restaurant. Dimsum bamboo steamers hang on the wall as decorative accents and they blend well with the shades of green paint and rattan frames. The wooden ceilings complemented fittingly with the geometric-patterned tiles on the floor. Once seated in this area below, you’ll find yourself taking some snaps with the pretty background.

The Food

Our family usually have this constant orders when dining in a Chinese restaurant – noodles, fried rice, dimsums, soup, and meat (chicken, pork). Also, what we typically like in a Chinese resto is that the meals are good for sharing. Here were some of our orders that day:

Birthday Noodles, Php 368
Mushroom and Vegetable Dumpling, Php 148
Deep Fried Pork Ribs with Spicy Salt & Pepper, Php 358
Modern Shanghai Seafood Fried Rice, Php 288
Modern Shanghai House Soup, Php 88
Fish Fillet with Black Bean Sauce, Php 388
Xiao Long Bao, Php 198
Signature Shanghai Fried Noodles, Php 348

All of our orders tasted good. We had a mix of pancit, dimsums, soup, rice, fish and pork to balance out everything. So far, I cannot remember anything negative from what we ate. What stood out for me was the Deep Fried Pork Ribs with Spicy Salt & Pepper. It was crispy and seasoned well. Fried rice is a staple dish that I tend to compare when eating at Chinese restaurants. Some tend to be dry and overpriced. Thankfully, Modern Shanghai is decent enough to satisfy my preference. The Birthday Noodles has generous toppings that we typically look for in “Pancit” such as vegetables, meat, seafood, and quail eggs. Generally, the food was okay. We liked everything on the menu and it suits our expectations for a well-rounded Chinese cuisine. The prices are fair enough too for the serving. Although, maybe it could be better if they have bigger servings. One serving is good for 2-3 pax only so we ended up ordering one single dish twice or similar to that.

Closing

If you’re looking for a new venue to celebrate your occasions with loved ones, then Modern Shanghai is worth the try — good food, decent servings, and fair prices.

I thought I would have a hard time writing this as this was the last birthday celebration of our beloved cousin Jessa, and she passed away last May. We are still heartbroken and dumbfounded with her untimely demise. Yet, I savor these moments and I am happy that we did our very best to make her last birthday with us memorable. She also remains as one of my greatest inspirations why I continue my passion for food and writing today, so I wrote this for her.

Thank you, Pop. We love you and we hope we made you happy not just on your last birthday, but everyday when we were together. See you again!
